One of the areas in Hollow Knight is Greenpath, shown here in a screenshot posted on hollowknight.fandom.com.

Team Cherry, an Australian group of only four people, released their debut game, Hollow Knight, in February 2017. The game quickly became popular, selling 3 million copies by the end of 2020.

Hollow Knight is an expansive story-driven metroidvania and by far the greatest game I have ever played.

Each player takes the form of a small, mysterious creature in an infected kingdom, and travels through diverse biomes in the hopes of stopping said infection.

Each biome’s tone is represented wonderfully, not only in the art but also in the music and audio design.

The gameplay is very enjoyable and evolves as you play through many different aspects, such as charms that make small changes to how specific things work, and spells that add new ways to attack while also allowing you to reach places that were once inaccessible.

Hollow Knight also includes many side quests and challenges that really test your skill.

Silksong, a new Hollow Knight game, is due to be released in 2023. (Team Cherry)

One of the most immersive parts of the game is the lore it contains. At a first glance, the goal seems simple: there’s an infection and you need to stop it.

If you start looking into the details, however, it gets a lot more complicated. Without going into spoilers, the main character is more related to the kingdom that it would seem at first glance.

All of these factors mix to make a refreshing new take on an old genre. For only $15 digitally, and with a new game on the way, I would highly suggest that you check it out.

According to the Team Cherry website, Silksong is “[c]urrently in development for Pc, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.”
