Fall sports here at Concord High are in full swing, and many teams are already showing success.
Perhaps the most talked about and best attended sports here at Concord High School is varsity football. The team is coming off of a championship-winning season where they posted a perfect record.
The Crimson Tide this season seems to have picked up right where it left off last year, already winning every game and being ranked number two in the state.
One reason for the team’s success is the leadership of Robert Law, who in the position of quarterback is responsible for providing some direction.
“Sometimes I do feel a bit of an added pressure, but I always look forward to our upcoming games and being with the team,” he said.
Another fall sport worth noting is the Concord High cheer squad, which in addition to competing performs regularly at football games.
A challenge the squad has faced is perhaps having everyone be synchronized. “Synchronization is the hardest thing to do in cheer. It can be hard trying to get everyone on the same page.” Says Junior Taylor Bolton.
Senior captain McKenna Kopp said her favorite thing about cheer is that team members spend significant time together to achieve synchronization. The team has gotten much better, said, sophomore Alexis Turner, and members’ communicating skills are at an all time high.
No matter what the sport, there is emphasis at Concord High that games should be played the right way. Because of that, the school just won another sportsmanship award, evidence that hard work by athletes, coaches and fans continues to pay off.
Operating a respected sports program is “huge,” said Principal Gene Connolly, who attends almost all school-wide events and goes to as many sporting events as possible. “It’s gratifying seeing the players discover something about themselves.”
