Language of the unheard

Language+of+the+unheard

Exemplary student work being celebrated by English 10 teacher Matt Skoby this month includes informational writing by Eli Duggan, whose “African-American Oppression” post is part of a blog project related to a class study of The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore.
Duggan ties underlying reasons for riots in 1968 and 2015 to “pre-existing oppression and racism,” quoting The Independent reporter Heather Saul as he noted:”Officials and commentators on the riots in 2015 also point to similar causes, saying that young African-Americans, ‘feel as disenfranchised and disengaged as their counterparts did in April 1968 when riots broke out in the city’ due to racism and police brutality.”
Duggan also quotes Martin Luther King, Jr., who said in his exploration of causes and effects of historic rioting: “I think that we’ve got to see that a riot is the language of the unheard.”
