Exemplary student work being celebrated by English 10 teacher Matt Skoby this month includes “A Black Flame in a Dying Ocean,” a narrative essay by Concord High School sophomore Paige St. Peter.
St. Peter submitted the piece as part of a blog project related to a class study of The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore. The blog also includes informative and argumentative elements, including a discussion of how the memoir relates to the Langston Hughes poem, “What Happens to a Dream Deferred?”
“In The Other Wes Moore, Wes’s mother imparts the value that we should protect and stand up for women as a result of her physical abuse she endured in her first marriage,” Skoby explained. “Students were asked to think about a value that has been instilled in them and to write a narrative that shows the specific value.”
