Alex Saveliev rockets past a Pinkerton senior runner as members of Concord’s JV and girls’ teams cheer at the 1-mile marker. Saveliev’s 5:17 pace caught him up to the top ten runners in the varsity race. The increase in distance between the top ten and slower runners brought a whole new feel to the race: who was going to win? who was going to die off in the next two miles? Saveliev later said, “It was really competive after the first mile. No one was intending to stop. Momentum flared through our whole bodies. I couldn’t go 100 feet without feeling someone breathing right on my back.”
