Seventeen students and four teachers relax and share stories during a 27-mile kayaking journey down the Merrimack River in late September as a part of Concord High School’s outdoor adventure class, R.O.P.E. (Reaching our Potential in Education). The group traveled to Franklin by bus with eleven kayaks and five canoes and spent two days paddling, exploring, wading in shallows to catch crawfish and even riding some small sections of rapids at Sewall’s Falls after first passing a test by trip leader Frank Harrison. Each student had to prove he or she was capable of a wet exit, a procedure that consists of rolling or flipping the kayak and then successfully getting out of the kayak and back to the surface.
